A Tuning Fork, She’s Looking Out

An exhibition featuring Veronica Cianfrano, Emily Royer, & Elise Thompson. With curation from Ash Fritzche.

A Tuning Fork, She’s Looking Out, examines how memory and emotion resonate across time, space, and material. Through layered surfaces, shifting light, and fragmented recollections, Cianfrano, Royer and Thompson investigate the tension between past and present, presence and absence, and concealment and revelation. The exhibition suggests that, like a tuning fork, our perceptions and histories continue to vibrate, even when unseen.

Wall-bound paintings and sculptural works reverberate personal and collective memory, much like a tuning fork carries a sound beyond its initial strike. The act of “looking out” points toward introspection and external awareness, reflecting how the artists navigate personal narratives, light, and abstraction. Thompson’s explorations of veiling and transparency, Royer’s rearranged timelines, and Cianfrano’s nostalgic imagery engage with how memory and experience are layered, partially obscured, or reinterpreted over time.

About the Artists:

  • Veronica Cianfrano

    Veronica Cianfrano is a curator, multimedia artist, teacher, the youngest of three daughters, and a first-generation American. In 2010 she received her MFA in Painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she discovered the need for better access to the arts. There she started CHER, a collaborative pop-up gallery; the mission of which was to bring thematically relevant contemporary art exhibitions to communities that don’t normally experience them by organizing temporary events, happening, and exhibitions in alternative spaces.

  • Emily Royer (b. 1982, New Brunswick, New Jersey)

    Emily Royer is an artist living and working in Philadelphia, PA. She received her BFA from the University of the Arts and continued studies with Turps Banana, UK and NYC Crit Club. Her paintings combine memories and imagined moments, creating vignettes that explore notions of self-identity, memory, and the complex nature of intimate relationships. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, UK and Canada. Including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Spring/Break NYC and galleries including PII, MIA (Philadelphia), Auxier Kline (NYC), Vardan (LA), The Philadelphia Art Alliance, and others.

  • Elise Thompson received her BFA from Northern Kentucky University in 2010, and her MFA at Florida State University in 2016. She currently lives and works in Philadelphia and was a finalist for the MyMA Artist Grant juried by Andrew Rafacz, in NYC. She also attended the DNA Artist Residency in Provincetown, MA in October of 2022.
